Adobe updates Photoshop and Illustrator for the Retina display

Adobe updates Photoshop and Illustrator for the Retina display

You may remember during the keynote when the MacBook Pro with the Retina display was announced, Apple briefly mentioned the Adobe Photoshop application being optimized for the new display. But as it happens, the Retina version of the application wasn’t quite ready back then.

Now, six months after the MacBook Pro was announced, Adobe has finally updated the Photoshop CS6 and the Illustrator CS6 applications for the Retina display. The update should now be available to all the legit users and will take care of all the blurry fonts and icons.

BlackBerry Messenger for Android shown off on video

BlackBerry Messenger for Android shown off on video

BlackBerry had promised us a version of its popular BlackBerry Messenger or BBM service for Android and iOS devices quite a while ago now. While we are yet to see the final version release on either platform, someone managed to get their hands on a beta and has a uploaded a video for our viewing pleasure.

As you can see from the image above, BBM for Android looks nothing like any other Android app. Instead of adopting the look of the platform, BlackBerry has decided to instead port over the look of BB10, which is why the BBM for Android looks exactly the way it does on BB10, complete with the tabs on the bottom and screens on the side.

You can see all your chats in the main window. Swiping right brings a screen with options such as chats, contacts, groups, updates and invites. On the right is the screen with the settings and options to start a multiperson chat or send broadcast message among other things.

The app has integration with NFC so you can tap your phones together and send contacts over to another Android device with BBM. The app itself looks pretty good and even in the beta seems to be working quite well.

We still don’t have a precise idea as to when the app would hit the two platforms and the more BlackBerry delays the launch the less the people will be interested in it when it actually arrives. As it is, there are not a lot of people who are holding their breath for this.

Do you own a Flash capable Android gadget? In case you do, then you have an update waiting for you. The Adobe’s Flash Player is now upgraded to version 10.3 resolving some previous issues and bringing lots of fixes, security updates and a few optimizations.

There is support for all Android 2.2, 2.3 and 3.01-based devices.

Here is the official change log:

  • Enabled NEON optimizations for OMAP4 (Cortex A9) based devices.
  • Corrected an issue on the Samsung Galaxy S where H.264 video at resolutions of 720p and below was not displayed.
  • Android Apps using Browser Plug-ins like Flash Player in WebView no longer need to set android:hardwareAcceleration to True in their AndroidMainfest.xml for plug-in output to be rendered. This was previously an issue on Android 3.0+ only.
  • Fixed a crash on the HTC EVO that some users encountered with specific video.
  • Fixed an issue that caused video frames to stop rendering on long streaming videos (> 1 hour) on some Motorola devices.

If you want to see all the 10.3 details with the new security enhancements and known issues and limitations, just hit the source link below. Otherwise, just go to the Android Market and get yours updated.

The Apple’s $10,000 iTunes Gift Card for the 10 billion app download goes to Gail Davis from Orpington, Kent, UK. She is definitely assured with apps for the rest of her life.

The Apple AppStore is constantly expanding and it’s got some excellent, high-quality entertainment content.

Apple gives credit where it's due - acknowledges Open Street Maps in iPhoto

Apple gives credit where it's due - acknowledges Open Street Maps in iPhoto

Back when Apple released its iPhoto app with the arrival of the new iPad some people noted that the company was using map data that doesn’t look Googlish in origin.

Some digging in the matter revealed that Apple (who back then claimed they were using Gmaps) is using Open Street Maps with a custom overlay on top. Now we see an acknowledgement to OSM in the latest iPhoto version.

Recently, Foursquare and others made the jump to the free OSM too. The maps project is user contributed and can be edited by third parties, not unlike the way Wikipedia works.

Apparently, OSM tried to contact Apple on the matter of giving them credit but it wasn’t until a volunteer mapper on OSM (who incidentally is also an iOS dev) contacted some people over at Apple that things got spinning and now the due credit is there on the iPhone acknowledgements screen.

We have a feeling that this isn’t the end – Apple’s native Maps app on iOS still uses Google Maps, but perhaps things might change?

Identity Crisis: Confused Nokia N9 can't choose which OS to use

Identity Crisis: Confused Nokia N9 can't choose which OS to use, comes with 7 to cover all the bases [VIDEO]

Proud owners of a new Nokia N9 are probably more than happy with its unique, quirky and individual OS MeeGo, but for some, that just isn’t enough.

Screen from the video demo of this confused device

This unusual looking lime green N9 has been demoed on video showcasing its ability to switch between not just one, but seven different mobile operating systems. Of course it’s not some special edition or in house unit leaked from the Finns but in fact a peculiar shanzhai/’Nok-off’ straight from the back streets of China.

This Chinese impostor, although not quite living up to the hardware specs of the real-deal does have the unique power to switch between MeeGo, iOS 5.0, Windows Phone 7, BBOS, HTC Sense, Samsung’s TouchWiz and Symbian Anna.

Assumedly this device is for users who just can’t make up their minds, or at least like to keep things interesting. Along with this menagerie of operating systems, the Nok-off N9 totes dual-SIM functionality, a 3.8″ WQVGA resistive touchscreen, a 1.3MP camera on the back and to top it all off, a Talking Tom app, typically found on a genuine iOS device and a selection of pre-installed porn too, one would assume for when the OS switching loses its appeal.

We don’t have a price for this confused N9 but it’s at least caught our attention as one of the most impressive knock-offs we’ve seen.

Footage of how it would feel to fly over Planet Earth [VIDEO]

Space has always captured the minds of people for centuries, from those who the spent time to map and document stars and planets across the night sky, to the first men and women who actually took flight beyond our atmosphere into the unknown.

curvature of the earth's ionosphere visible

Despite a lull is televised space exploration and media attention on space research in recent years, our love for this mysterious void is alive and well. Don’t believe me, just take a look at this recent footage from the International Space Station and try to not be impressed.

The video condenses a sizable rotation around the earth into all of 60 seconds, starting somewhere over the Pacific Ocean and moving across the America’s by night, before coming to daybreak over Antarctica and covering a host of other locales in between, such as Mexico, and the Amazon, check it out, it’s breathtaking.
